Teaching, to me, is the best way to learn because it helps me synthesize concepts down to a way that makes them explainable to my students. Having grown up in a family of teachers, I’ve always had a love of teaching. Growing up, my mum was a Math and English tutor. She was so good that she couldn’t keep up with the demand for her services so I was occasionally brought in to help. I enjoyed it so much that I started tutoring Math, Physics, Chemistry, and English. After earning my black belt, I started teaching Karate as well. Teaching offered me a steady source of income on the side. As a B.Eng. student in Carleton, I was hired as a teaching assistant for 5 math and 1 electronic course at the Bachelor’s level, which felt like quite an honour! Teaching came naturally to me. In fact, my most enjoyable leadership positions are the ones in which I can teach as well.
Leading, to me, is the best way to follow because it enables me to help people achieve the commonality between our mutual dreams. Throughout my life, I was somehow chosen to lead whether I liked it or not. Even as a 7-year-old boy, I led my group of friends during recess. As a boy scout, I became the patrol leader but I was still not ready to lead. During my B.Eng. Capstone project, I was the defacto leader of my team because we were working on my idea but I was still not ready to accept the responsibility of leadership. Even in my first start-up, PATTERNS, I assumed the role of CTO instead of CEO. However, I did enjoy every leadership opportunity along the way and even accepted some of them. For the Jive Hive, we had no choice so I led the group. For Stocate, I was finally prepared and willing to take on a leadership role (after 3 years of avoiding it). I’ve loved every moment of it – it has shown me so much about myself and the people around me.
Teams
Here are some of the group pictures that we have (barely) managed to sit still for over the years. Note: Covid caused a gap in pictures but not a gap in teams, with whom we have just as many fond memories. Enjoy browsing!
